Two Changzhou-based battery leaders—SVOLT Energy and China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB)—have been ranked among the top 20 innovative entities for published power battery system patents in China, according to a newly released 2024 report by the China Automotive IP Utilization Promotion Center (CAIPC) and the Technology and Innovation Support Center of China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC).

SVOLT ranked third nationwide with 1,137 published patents, while CALB claimed the ninth spot with 464 patents. Both firms are headquartered in Jintan district, reaffirming Changzhou’s position as a national powerhouse in the new energy sector.

SVOLT has cemented its position as a global leader in short-blade battery technology for electric vehicles, with over 270,000 units delivered in 2024—the highest volume worldwide in this segment. Between 2019 and 2024, the company invested 4.498 billion yuan in R&D, accumulating over 6,000 active patents, including its breakthrough “Cobalt-Free Cathode Material and Preparation Method for Lithium-ion Batteries”, which won a China Patent Excellence Award.

CALB has made significant advancements in battery structural engineering, including its simplified top cover assembly, “Top Stream” cylindrical cells, and “One-Stop” battery systems, reinforcing its role as an industry standard-setter. Additionally, CALB played a key role in establishing the Lithium-ion Battery Committee under the Patent Protection Association of China, strengthening China’s global competitiveness in battery intellectual property.
